Reading EYFS - Y6

 Reading EYFS – Y6

In reception, pupils take home a reading book and flashcards. The first set of flashcards sent home are the first 26 sounds. Once these are known, pupils then work towards progressing through red flashcards (sets 1-4) and then on to yellow (sets 1-9). We aim to check flashcards once a week. Pupils must be confident and recognise and read the flashcards on sight before moving on. Previous sets are revisited regularly. These pupils also take a library book to share at home.

For KS1 pupils we subscribe to Pearson's Bug Club website to enable the pupils using the book bands for reading to access the same quality reading material at home as in school and complete comprehension questions as they read. KS1 pupils will also be given flashcards and will be encouraged to practise these at home as part of their reading homework. We aim to check flashcards once a week. Pupils must be confident and recognise and read the flashcards on sight before moving on. Previous sets are revisited regularly. KS1 pupils will also have AF (Assessment Focus) questions to answer to encourage discussion about the text they are reading. These can be found in reading diaries and are given as a ½ termly focus.

KS1 pupils and parents check out this website! Your child will have been given a user name and password (see information in reading diary). If it has been lost please ask your child’s class teacher for a replacement.

The website offers a wealth of materials to encourage children in KS1 to engage in reading activities in an online reading world and develop their comprehension skills as they read and have fun. Bug Club takes children on a personalised reading journey having access to electronic copies of all our main reading scheme books.

We aim for the majority of pupils to enter KS2 as a free reader. They will have access to a choice of texts from our classroom reading corners and library. KS2 pupils are expected to provide written answers to AF questions alongside their reading to demonstrate a higher level of engagement with a text.
